Human vs AI, Why Discretion and Experience Still Matter Humano vs IA, Por Qué la Discreción y la Experiencia Siguen Importando
Every few weeks, the same headline returns: AI is coming for our jobs, and discretionary traders are next on the list. I build automated systems myself, so I’m not here to dismiss the technology. I’m here to tell you what happened on September 22.
Our News Analytics engine flagged a headline on RCL and sent us long. On the surface, the logic was clean: M&A news, a clear catalyst, a keyword match. But the system missed one critical detail. RCL was the acquirer in the deal, not the target. In M&A, that distinction changes everything. Acquirers often get repriced lower, because the market starts asking what the buyer is paying, how it is funding the deal, and how much value it is giving away.
The trade opened as a loser.
This is where a machine reaches its limit. A mechanical system executes the rule it was given. It doesn’t question whether the rule fits the situation in front of it. It doesn’t feel that something is off, or read the context behind a headline and realize that the story is the opposite of what the classifier assumed.
I did. Experience made me recognize the mistake immediately, and it also showed me the opportunity hidden inside it: a short with high expected value. So I flipped the position, and the trade finished positive.
The lesson is not that humans beat machines. The lesson is that they do different things.
AI is extraordinary at speed, scale, and consistency. It scans thousands of headlines without fatigue and never gets emotional. But discretion is what interprets ambiguity, questions the premise, and turns an error into an edge. Judgment is built from thousands of hours of pattern recognition, pain, and repetition, and that isn’t something you can download.
The traders who will thrive are not the ones who compete with algorithms. They are the ones who build systems that do the heavy lifting and stay sharp enough to catch what those systems can’t see.
The future of trading isn’t Human or AI. It’s a human who knows exactly when to trust the machine, and when to overrule it.
