Systematic Trading Strategies, Today's Mean Reversion Trade: PUSA Estrategias Sistemáticas de Trading, el Trade de Mean Reversion de Hoy: PUSA
Mean reversion is not a bet that a stock is wrong. It is a bet that a move got ahead of the liquidity available to sustain it, and that the gap between price and fair value is where the trade actually lives.
The signal. At 10:06, PUSA printed an extension of 5.14 ATR, a stretch far beyond what the stock’s own normal range would call ordinary. A move that size, this early relative to its own volatility, is rarely driven purely by fresh information continuing to arrive at the same pace. More often it reflects a short, sharp imbalance between buyers and sellers that outran the volume actually behind it.
The edge being taken. This is where liquidity provision is the entire thesis. The strategy isn’t predicting direction on a fresh catalyst, it is stepping in as the counterparty to an overextension, the same role a market maker plays when a price runs further than real participation justifies, and getting paid for supplying the liquidity the move was missing. The target was VWAP, the session’s running fair-value anchor, not a fixed price level chosen in advance. A reversion trade that targets VWAP is a trade on the move correcting back toward where actual volume has been transacting, not on a guess about where the stock should trade.
The outcome. Price reverted to VWAP, and the session closed with a successful Mean Reversion play.
The discipline worth naming here isn’t the win itself, it’s what the strategy never does: it doesn’t ask whether the news was good or bad, and it doesn’t forecast where the stock goes next. It reads an extension, reads the liquidity gap behind it, and takes the other side of a move that ran further than the volume supporting it could justify.
